چکیده

Rowland Atkinson and John Flint are researchers at the Department of Urban Studies, University of Glasgow. Both have an interest in the spatial distribution and experience of social exclusion and have been commissioned to devise a methodology for tracing residents who leave regeneration areas in Scotland. •In its simplest formulation snowball sampling consists of identifying respondents who are then used to refer researchers on to other respondents. •Snowball sampling contradicts many of the assumptions underpinning conventional notions of sampling but has a number of advantages for sampling University of Surrey Sociology at Surrey

Sampling hard to reach populations.

Studies on 'hidden populations', such as homeless people, prostitutes and drug addicts, raise a number of specific methodological questions usually absent from research involving known populations and less sensitive subjects. This paper examines the advantages and limitations of nonrandom methods of data collection such as snowball sampling. It reviews the currently available literature on samp...

Comparing two sampling methods to engage hard-to-reach communities in research priority setting

BACKGROUND Effective community-partnered and patient-centered outcomes research needs to address community priorities. However, optimal sampling methods to engage stakeholders from hard-to-reach, vulnerable communities to generate research priorities have not been identified. METHODS In two similar rural, largely Hispanic communities, a community advisory board guided recruitment of stakehold...

Adaptive sampling in behavioral surveys.

Studies of populations such as drug users encounter difficulties because the members of the populations are rare, hidden, or hard to reach. Conventionally designed large-scale surveys detect relatively few members of the populations so that estimates of population characteristics have high uncertainty. Ethnographic studies, on the other hand, reach suitable numbers of individuals only through t...

Review of sampling hard-to-reach and hidden populations for HIV surveillance.

Adequate surveillance of hard-to-reach and 'hidden' subpopulations is crucial to containing the HIV epidemic in low prevalence settings and in slowing the rate of transmission in high prevalence settings. For a variety of reasons, however, conventional facility and survey-based surveillance data collection strategies are ineffective for a number of key subpopulations, particularly those whose b...

Some advances in Respondent-driven sampling on directed social networks

Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is one of the most commonly used methods when sampling from hidden or hard-to-reach populations. The RDS methodology combines an improved snowball sampling scheme with a mathematical model that is able to produce unbiased population estimates given that some assumptions about the actual recruitment process are fulfilled. One critical assumption, which is not lik...
